The Grounds of Up2U’s Mission Statement
The founders of Up2U included a significant proportion of Christian
believers and others who (whilst not themselves Christian believers) had sympathy
with the objectives expressed in Up2U’s Mission Statement. Up2U’s founders intended
the entity they established to operate on “Christian Business Principles” that are
consistent with Christian beliefs.
The founders of Up2U who are Christian believers had found from experience that some
of the principles prevailing in the general commercial world are inconsistent with
some of their Christian beliefs, in particular
• Workplaces that are oppressive environments in which to be employed. This can be due
to the nature of the control mechanisms applied to workplaces, the dehumanising nature
of some of the work that employees are asked to undertake, or due to the values permeating
the institution.
• Enterprises that pursue an unbridled policy of maximising the return to providers of
capital over all other considerations.
• Businesses who place no special value on their human resources over their other
commerical assets.
The “Christian Business Principles” expressed in Up2U's Mission Statement are aspects
of Christian belief that have direct applicability in the commercial world. Up2U
is not concerned with beliefs, per se, including those of Up2U’s founders. However
these are the two primary Christian beliefs (with which Christians generally agree)
from which these “Christian Business Principles” derived:
• that there is a loving God who gives purpose to human existence, including work
• Jesus Christ shows the relationship God wishes to maintain with mankind, including
relationships in the workplace.
